Product Information

Cable Gear/Brake Service

A cable gear/brake service is best for your bike when:

gear or brake cable inner bicycle fit bike fitting maintenance repairs service

Gear & brake inner cables need replaced due to age, corrosion, fraying  or you just want to freshen them for the next season or big ride. Also included is adjustment of your front & rear gear limit screws and brakes. Your bike will have tyres inflated to recommended pressure and cursory bike frame wipe down included in the service.

Due to age or possibly having been stored in damp conditions, steel gear inner wire can start to corrode. Corrosion travels down the length of the inner cable to create a stiff or seized feeling when you change gears. Replacing your inner cables will solve this issue in all but extreme cases. If you can see any splitting of your black outer cable, you’re likely best to replace any section. Not changing these damaged sections can lead to further problems down the line with the re-occurrence of the same issue.

DM’s Tip: Front gear mechanism seized? Stored with a build up of dirt? Try pulling it up to the large chainring by hand. It is spring loaded, so expect a bit of resistance, but you should be able to move it freely. It should then naturally return to the position you moved it from. If this part doesn’t move easily or at all, cleaning may improve performance. If it looks heavily corroded with rusted pins, be prepared for investment in a new one!

Note: Outer cable lengths will be charged per metre @ £1.50 / Ferrules for outer cable are priced at 25 pence / Alloy end caps for inner cables are included in this service.
